Sequential compression therapy
is a non-invasive treatment, using air compressed
on the limb to move fluids. It recreates the effect
of exercise and manual massage. The internal material
of the garment stretches and gets around all contours
of the limb.
The sequential compression
therapy machine is simple to use and the peristaltic
action gently massages and pushes fluid back into
the venous system. The system comprises of a ten-chambered
garment, with air filling each chamber in turn.
The system is imported from the United Kingdom.
Varying pressure can be
applied to the limb according to the requirements
of the condition being treated. A light massage can
be achieved using the 40 second cycle and 20 mm of
pressure. A 60 second cycle deepens the massage. A
120 second cycle will push the fluid deep through
the interstitial spaces. Tissue fluid is pushed through
the interstitial spaces, passing into the vessels
of the venous system and is eventually excreted via
the kidneys; surplus fluid is drained into the lymphatic
vessels simultaneously.
